In 2002, the City of Flowery Branch faced strict new requirements around discharging water back into a nearby lake, which is a drinking water source for the community. If unable to meet new phosphorus limits, the city would have been banned from discharging any additional water into Lake Lanier, resulting in an immediate negative impact on the city. Therefore, the City needed to find an alternative wastewater system.
After a thorough evaluation of various wastewater treatment solutions, Pall Water's Aria FLEX custom membrane system was selected because of its critical ability to meet the phosphorus limits. The Aria FLEX system also helped the plant increase their maximum capacity and successfully meet Flowery Branch’s discharge limit.

The City of Flowery Branch needed a water treatment solution that could quickly meet new water requirements. The quality and performance of Pall’s membranes were instrumental in helping Flowery Branch exceed new phosphorus limits of 0.13 mg/L in order for the treated wastewater to continue to be directly discharged into Lake Lanier.
The quality and performance of Pall Water’s membranes for tertiary treatment were particularly important and allowed the plant to meet new permit requirements for phosphorus limits. The Aria FLEX system was also a fast solution. Requiring minimal infrastructure, the Aria FLEX took the least amount of time to get up and running, whereas other systems would have required the construction of a new plant.
Most notably, the implementation of the Aria FLEX system allowed Flowery Branch to meet the posed limits of 0.13 mg/L phosphorus reduction in order for the treated wastewater to continue to be directly discharged into Lake Lanier. This also brought the water quality to reuse standards and resulted in a reduced concentration of solids and other contaminants.
After 10 years, the plant continues to run successfully. Currently the plant, which has 1.3 MGD peak flow capacity, runs an average of 500,000 gallons per day which is split between the two permits. Due to increased water use resulting from future population growth, the City of Flowery Branch plans to expand their discharge capacity, which will require their phosphorus limits to drop into the 0.08-0.06 mg/L range. The Aria FLEX system is currently producing water in the 0.07-0.05 mg/L range, so the plant will not need to make any modifications when the new limit goes into effect.
