A mine in remote Nevada experienced a pit flood resulting from groundwater recharge. Over 40 million gallons of water flooded the open pit, bringing mine operations to a halt. The groundwater, when introduced to the pit, was then contaminated with manganese (Mn), heavy metals, and sulfides.

 

The contaminated water needed treatment for use in agricultural irrigation. Furthermore, the mine needed treatment immediately, as winter was approaching, and the site would not be accessible during this time. An immediate solution was needed to resume operations at the mine.
